A beacon that refused to be forgotten
Completed in 1872, the current Bodie Island Lighthouse is the third beacon built to protect the ever-changing coastline. The first lighthouse was abandoned as erosion claimed the shoreline, while the second was destroyed by retreating Confederate troops during the Civil War.
Captured in the golden light before sunset, The Third Watch honors a beacon that refused to be forgotten. Rising where two others fell, it stands as a symbol of resilience, continuing its silent watch over the Outer Banks more than 150 years later.
